Position Summary

Reporting to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology’s Director of Education, this bilingual educator works to ensure that HMSC builds robust partnerships with Latinx and other diverse communities to increase attendance to, participation with and learning via the resources of HMSC museums. The educator will develop, implement, and evaluate a full range of social science educational experiences for school children (K-12), professional educators, and family audiences both on and off-site. This position works closely with curators and other museum personnel, in addition to collaborating with school educators (teachers and administrators), other cultural organizations, and independent consultants or community advisors (where applicable) to implement, evaluate or support community, school and teacher programs. Fifty percent of this role’s effort is coordinating the second year of the Hear Me Out/Escuchame program for Latinx teens from Chelsea and Somerville. The educator will design and co-facilitate online and/or face-to-face workshops in English and Spanish, soliciting teen thoughts and feelings on contemporary issues related to the exhibits in our cultural and natural history museums. They will use technologies (i.e., videoconferencing, photography, podcast software) to broaden access to museum resources for a non-college audience. They will be the primary contact with 24 teens and coordinate production and installation of youth projects with HMSC Exhibits staff. The educator will perform other duties as needed.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and help steward educator and community networks to support program offerings
  • Develop and deliver family, youth, and K-12 programs in both English and Spanish.
  • Use evolving educational technologies and museum field best-practices to broaden access to and promote interdisciplinary engagement with archaeological and anthropological resources for educational purposes
  • Contribute to HMSC’s diversity and inclusion work groups
  • Assist the Director of Education with event planning and implementation including audience development
  • Works with museum volunteers as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • BA or higher in anthropology, education, or other social science or humanities field
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with K-12 school or family audiences
  • Ability to read, write and speak Spanish

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience collaborating with the Latinx community
  • Experience working with teens a plus
  • Experience producing displays or community events
  • Knowledge of technology as a tool for learning/teaching
  • Ability to organize work and manage time well
  • Creativity, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience teaching with or about non-western or
  • Indigenous peoples a plus

Physical Requirements
Must be able to routinely lift up to 30 lbs. and climb stairs
