Under the general direction of the Museum’s Director this position is split as Curator of Native American Cultures and being UCLA’s Repatriation Coordinator. As curator, the position manages and organizes the Fowler Museum’s Native American collections and associated documentation. As Repatriation Coordinator, the position is responsible for the implementation of NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA and related repatriation activities at UCLA. Develops exhibitions related to Native American cultures. Seeks grant funds to support repatriation and collaborative community projects. Supervises the Archeological Collections Manager (who supervises a repatriation team including two leads, student employees, and interns) an archivist, and others needed to meet compliance requirements.
Qualifications
Required/Preferred
- Working knowledge of the field of Museum Studies, American Indian Studies, and Anthropology.
- Familiarity with material culture from California and Native America.
- Expert knowledge and experience in Repatriation laws and policies.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with Tribes and Indigenous communities.
- PhD or equivalent experience with specialization in either Museum Studies, American Indian Studies, Art, History, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of FileMaker, Microsoft Office products, and ability to maintain a digital data management system.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, students and volunteers, and to coordinate activities with other staff members.
- Excellent skills in written and spoken communication.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs routinely
- Demonstrated collaborative experience with Tribes and Indigenous communities.
- Ability to work with materials (feathers, fur, hair, fibers, natural dyes, etc) that may aggravate allergies.
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately, and to be responsive to an often challenging production environment; ability to work effectively on many projects simultaneously.
- Working knowledge of Federal and State laws that affect Native America.
- Ability to communicate clearly, productively, cooperatively, diplomatically, and respectfully in the professional environment.
- Ability to organize time, set priorities and perform effectively under deadline.
- Excellent fine manual skills, patience, and attention to detail.
