The Eton Myers Collection contains over 540 ancient Egyptian artefacts on loan to the University of Birmingham from Eton College, Windsor. Over 65% of the collection requires cataloguing, digitisation and condition reports to be carried out according to Spectrum standards (collections management standards for museums outlined by the Collections Trust). In return for the loan of the Eton Myers Collection, on loan until 2025, Eton College requires that the University of Birmingham carry out these digitisation and cataloguing requirements.
The post holder will be required to work independently, without supervision, on site where the objects are on display and stored (Orchard Learning Resource Centre, Selly Oak). The amount of time required to catalogue, digitise and condition check each three-dimensional object will vary due to the range of materials, state of preservation and amount of detail required for each artefact.
The cataloguing and digitisation responsibilities of the post will enable digital access to the collection, raising the profile of the Eton Myers Collection as a unique resource for academics and students at the University of Birmingham interested in researching Egyptology, archaeology and material culture.
The post holder will provide essential academic support and help to facilitate access to the collection for a range of internal researchers, staff and volunteers, specialist networks, and external interest groups.
The post holder will liaise with the academic curator of the collection, Dr Olabarria, and will report to the Head of the department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, and/or the Head of the School of History and Cultures.
The post holder will catalogue, digitise, and condition check the objects in the Eton Myers collection housed in the Mingana Room with a view to finalising their documentation and improving digital access to the collection. This work will include producing high-quality images of the objects meeting Spectrum standards, as well as researching individual artefacts. The post holder will also and provide essential academic support, facilitating access to the collection for internal researchers, staff and volunteers, specialist networks, and external interest groups, as well as dealing with public enquiries as required.
