National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe. With one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, we are responsible for the acquisition, preservation and display of a substantial part of Scotland’s cultural, historic and national heritage.
Millions of local and international visitors enjoy our four museums each year, and we also introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can physically visit our museums through, touring exhibitions, loans, community engagement, digital programmes and research.
Over the last decade, we have invested over £120 million in our sites and have more than doubled our visitor numbers, with over 3 million people now visiting our four museums. Alongside this, we have continued to transform how we communicate and engage with our audiences. 2019 has seen the completion of our Masterplan for the National Museum of Scotland with the opening of three new galleries dedicated to Ancient Egypt, East Asia and the Art of Ceramics.
Based at the National Museum of Scotland within the World Cultures Department, this 15-month, full-time post will undertake a review of African and Caribbean collections in Scottish Museums. The project, Reveal and Connect, is funded by Museums Galleries Scotland through a consortium including Glasgow Life, the Hunterian (University of Glasgow), and University of Aberdeen Collections, led by National Museums Scotland.
The aim of the project is to increase understanding of and public access to African and Caribbean collections in Scotland. Working within the relevant staff in the World Cultures department, including the Curator/Senior Curator for African Collections and the Keeper, liaising with the National Project Manager and Head of Department in the National and International Partnerships department, working closely with staff from the partner museums, and with direction from the Steering Committee and Advisory Board, your duties will include visiting museums throughout Scotland to identify and document collections, gathering and collating information (both image and text), consulting museum documentation, writing reports, and presenting results. The project also aims to build a network of museums and people from associated communities in Scotland, and museums and stakeholders in African and Caribbean countries, including their membership on the project Steering Group and Advisory Board. You will support these and other engagement activities.
With a track record of delivery in research and project management, ideally within a museum or similar environment, applicants should have a degree in a relevant subject area and/or equivalent personal or professional experience with demonstrable specialism in African and/or Caribbean topics. Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant subject or equivalent personal or professional experience will be an advantage.
