Job Summary
The Chief Curator has overall responsibility for collection care, documentation, and dissemination; oversees management of collection records, digitization projects, and conservation; manages the museum team (including primary responsibility for performance management and career development); advises on gifts and acquisitions; and oversees preparation of the budget.

As Curator of the collections, the Chief Curator may organize exhibitions and undertakes ongoing research in and publication of the collections.

Reporting to the Director, the Chief Curator liaises with other departments, including Facilities and Security, to ensure proper stewardship of the collections, and collaborates on institution-wide research, publication, education, and outreach projects.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for collection care, documentation, provenance research, interpretation, and development.
  • Oversees performance management and professional development of Museum staff.
  • Oversees preparation of the annual budget and forecast, monitors expenses.
  • Collaborates closely with Facilities, Gardens, and Security on matters of building maintenance and security.
  • Undertakes original research leading to exhibitions and publications. Takes a leading role in enhancing the research and educational value of the collection. Contributes to dissemination of information about the collection (e.g. presentations, publications, exhibitions).
  • Oversees exhibition planning, object conservation, analysis, and photography.
  • Researches and makes recommendations regarding gifts and possible acquisitions. ­­­­­­Working collaboratively with the curatorial team and liaising closely with the Director’s Office, oversees the plan of temporary exhib­­­itions and public outreach.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Basic Qualifications
Master’s degree in specialized area. Strong museum experience, including exhibit development, collections care, gifts, and operations.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
Ph.D. preferred. Excellent analytical and organizational skills; excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work collegially in a team environment.
