The Libby Leshgold Gallery is a public art gallery dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art. Located within Emily Carr University, the Gallery serves a broad and varied community that includes the students, faculty and staff of the University, the arts community, the public of Greater Vancouver, and visitors from around the world.
Since its inception, the Libby Leshgold Gallery has operated with professional museum standards, made a significant contribution to the presentation and analysis of contemporary art in Canada, and functioned as a teaching gallery where students can learn professional curatorial and exhibition practices.
The Role
You will be joining the Libby Leshgold Gallery at a pivotal moment in its history. There is an opportunity to re-shape the place the Gallery occupies within the university community and the Vancouver art scene by strengthening its connections to local and broader communities. We are looking for someone who can bring new ideas and inspiration to the Gallery by seeking out new and emergent artists, media and programming that will intrigue and inspire students, residents and visitors alike.
As Director + Curator, you will be the driving force behind this change and lead the development, implementation and promotion of the Gallery and its programs. You will bolster the Gallery’s reputation as a key cultural space for contemporary art in Canada and expand its pedagogical capacity, in consultation with the academic leadership of the university, to provide more mentorship and professional development opportunities for students.
You will be responsible for the planning, presentation, and promotion of exhibitions and programming that reflect the mission and strategic goals of the Gallery and the University, including demonstratable commitments to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as the development of funding to support and expand this work. You will also stay abreast of the latest developments in curatorial methodology, theory and history, collaborating with the academic area on curatorial programming that is relevant and engaging for students and faculty.
In this position, you will also oversee the Michael O’Brien Exhibition Commons and other student exhibition venues, the embedded READ Books, ECU Press, the ECU Art Collection, and the outdoor screen as additional spaces for the presentation, interrogation and engagement with contemporary art, media and design.
This role reports into the Vice-President, Academic + Provost and consults with the Gallery Advisory Committee.

Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in art, art history, curatorial studies or an equivalent graduate degree in a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience)
• Minimum five years of curatorial experience.
• Experience working in an institution an asset.
• Advanced knowledge of contemporary art and visual culture.
• Thorough grounding in contemporary discourse around curatorial and exhibition practices.
• Demonstrated success in administration, collection management, publication and exhibition development.
• Experience with fundraising, including for public grants and with patron cultivation and management.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
• Proven skills in research, writing, and communication for a general and scholarly audience.
• Excellent working relationships with artists, gallerists, collectors and scholars.
• Ability to attract, motivate, and manage a talented staff; ability to be effective under pressure and handle constant multitasking.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively with diverse groups (including faculty and students, patrons, guest artists, volunteers, and community members) and promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
• Capacity to think creatively, analytically and conceptually.
• Strong organizational and networking skills that will allow you to foster cooperative alliances across the university and with other organizations.
• A proven track record of being able to fundraise.
• Comfortable mentoring, teaching, and staying up to date on the latest in curatorial theory and practice.
• A life-long learner who stays open to changing protocols.
