Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre outdoor museum located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where visitors experience large-scale sculpture and site-specific commissions under open sky. Since 1960, Storm King has been dedicated to stewarding the hills, meadows, and forests of its site and surrounding landscape. Building on the visionary thinking of its founders, Storm King supports artists and some of their most ambitious works. Changing exhibitions, programming, and seasons offer discoveries with every visit. This includes Storm King’s recently announced 2022 season with a special exhibition of outdoor and indoor sculptures by Wangechi Mutu and a site-specific commission by the New York-based artist Brandon Ndife.

About the role

Reporting to the Artistic Director and Chief Curator, the Associate Curator will participate in: collections development, research and cataloguing, and care; scholarly research, writing, publications and interpretation; and collection presentations and special exhibitions. They will lead project development and execution with artists who are making new works of art, and they will consult on object conservation needs. They will work with the Department of Education and Public Programs on the development and implementation of an array of public programs and will conduct tours and public lectures. They will develop relationships with donors, artists, gallerists, and art-world professionals in service of Storm King’s mission and artistic program.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Participates in all aspects of the curatorial department including the care, conservation, conceptualizing, exhibition, promotion and publication of the collection.
  • Collaborate with curators within the department to initiate and organize compelling and relevant scholarly special exhibitions and collection installations for Storm King’s diverse audiences.
  • Lead scholarly research on and interpretation of objects created by a diverse group of artists under his/her curatorial responsibility.
  • Build and maintain up-to-date cataloguing records in the collections database for online use.
  • Help to further develop acquisition criteria and strategies for Storm King.
  • Contribute to Museum publications, including catalogue essays and entries, as well as other printed and online research texts.
  • Contribute to public programs (working with artists, visiting scholars, the education and public programs team, volunteers and the general public).
  • Foster and maintain excellent working relationships with donors, collectors, dealers, colleagues from other institutions, the scholarly community, and other individuals involved in the interests of Storm King.
  • Supervise and mentor the Curatorial Assistant and others.
  • Liaises with communications team and outside Public Relations firm in support of curatorial activities.
  • Works with development team to bolster efforts to support curatorial initiatives.
  • Supports the department’s efforts in the identification and acquisition of outstanding works of art for the collection.
  • Develops educational material for the collection and exhibitions and educates the general public, employees and docents.
  • Writes and edits art historical texts for publications, object labels and press.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation and benefits

The hiring annual salary is $80-85K. This position is eligible for the participate in the benefit programs generally offered by Storm King to its employees including medical, vision, dental, 403(b) retirement, life insurance, generous paid time off and more.
