Working primarily independently, the Museum Curatorial Assistant assists with the Museum’s programs or collection, acquisition and conservation, exhibitions, education, and publications. The Museum Curatorial Assistant reports to the Museum’s Curators and works on projects for other Curators as assigned. They are responsible for assisting in all aspects of collections and exhibitions development. They interface with Museum Registrars on processing acquisitions, loans, and exhibition projects; the maintenance and development of the permanent collection database records, and the management of departmental activities including research, programs, education, public affairs, and development.
In this role you will:
- Assist Curators with the research, development and implementation of changing exhibitions and collection rotations.
- Assist Curators with implementing lectures, symposia, films, digital and video presentations.
- Assist with cataloging collections and prepare registration materials
- General Curatorial and Clerical support:
- Interface regularly with faculty and students, the public, donors, galleries, and colleagues at other museums.
- Answer routine correspondence, fax, telephone, and email communications.
- Arrange curatorial travel and process payments for the curatorial department.
- Prepare agendas and attend meetings; keep track of action items and departmental to-do lists.
- Exhibition Planning:
- Work with Curators and Registrars in locating and requesting loan objects.
- Communicate with lenders and participants in loan shows.
- Collaborate with Museum’s Communications & Marketing and Education staff.
- Assist curators in preparing labels for permanent collection galleries and loan exhibitions.
- Collection Management:
- Arrange student and visitor access to the collection.
- Work with Museum Registrars to maintain accurate records in the database.
- Assist curators in cataloging the permanent collection and new acquisitions.
- Assist in planning rotations in galleries.
- Other duties may also be assigned.
*Please note that this position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered a hybrid role (3 or more days/week on campus). You may need to work extended or non-standard hours, weekends and holidays based on business needs. You may work in areas with exposure to dust, paint, chemicals, and other toxins. Travel will be limited to Stanford campus between schools/units.
