With the Basel Public Art Collection, the canton of Basel-Stadt operates one of the most important art museums in Europe, which is known for its outstanding collections and exhibitions that have an international impact. The Kunstmuseum Basel has had three houses since 2016, which enables an attractive program design. In the next few years, the museum will renovate the structural infrastructure of the main building.
About the position
As director, you bear overall responsibility for the management and positioning of the institution in the urban, national and international environment. Together with the museum team, you will develop the institution further in strategic, content-related and organizational terms. They control the management, the scientific development and the presentation of the collections. They ensure a good working atmosphere, cultivate cooperation with other museums, ensure coordination with the cantonal administration and establish sustainable partnerships with the University of Basel and with collectors, sponsors and patrons.
They see the museum as a place of participation and encounter. You see the inclusion of the different groups in urban society and shaping the public role of the museum in the city and region as a key task.
Requirements
For this demanding task, we are looking for an outstanding personality with proven international experience in a curatorial and entrepreneurial management position in an art museum or a comparable institution. The director is responsible for the profile and overall strategic development of the institution. The prerequisite is the professional competence for program design and collection development, preferably proven by a qualified university degree. In addition to leadership qualities, qualifications in management and administrative discipline, the position to be filled also requires excellent communication and teamwork skills, knowledge of German and personal charisma.
