Brooklyn Museum

Salary: $70,000
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

The Senior Exhibition Designer position is part of the Exhibition Design team and is responsible for independently creating compelling exhibitions, both temporary and long term, and assisting the Director of Exhibition Design in departmental operations and in supporting junior designers.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in architecture, 3-D design, or related area required
  • Ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years’ experience in museum or art-related exhibition design with a portfolio of work
  • Proven ability to collaborate with other museum or arts professionals and manage an interdisciplinary staff as they work on installation
  • Knowledge of museum-display methods, conservation techniques, and electronic media
  • Ability to collaborate with other museum professionals, work creatively, and remain on schedule and on budget is essential
  • Familiarity with digital media, world and contemporary art, and building trades is valuable
  • Must have a dynamic sense of color, space, and lighting
  • Knowledge of design programs in an Apple environment, including Vectorworks, Rhinoceros, SketchUp, and Photoshop

Responsibilities:

  • Execute dynamic, large-scale exhibitions from concept through completion and work effectively with exhibition layouts, concept renderings, shop drawings, carpentry, painters, and electricians
  • Design of gallery architecture, display furniture and pedestals, platforms, vitrines, and other support structures as well as preparation of mount specifications; paint plans; lighting and audio-visual specifications; and sourcing of materials
  • Familiarity with exhibition lighting
  • Collaborate with curators, exhibition managers, graphic designers, shops, outside vendors, and other professionals to create outstanding exhibitions
  • Assist Director of Exhibition Design in overseeing overall institutional aesthetics
  • Provide guidance to junior designers
