The Studio Museum in Harlem

The Youth Programs Manager is responsible for developing and managing the implementation of the Studio Museum’s programs designed for teen communities and providing a safe environment for teens to express themselves creatively. Youth Programs offer students the opportunity to meet and converse with prominent visual artists, express their ideas in discussions, participate in tours and hands-on workshops, learn about museums and career opportunities in the arts, and develop important communication and critical thinking skills.

Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History and Community is an eight-month photography-based program for a select group of students enrolled in a high school or GED program. Participants work with a diverse group of arts professionals to explore issues related to community, history, and culture while learning the basics of photography in a regimen of art workshops, discussion groups, and field excursions. Expanding the Walls uses the work of renowned photographer James Van Der Zee as a catalyst for discussion and art-making. The program culminates with a celebration of the participants’ work.

The Teen Leadership Council is a group of New York City-based teens that foster a fun and safe space for teens to express creative ideas with The Studio Museum in Harlem. Teen Leadership Council members assist with planning and facilitating the Museum’s free programs for teens, including Art Looks and Studio Works, and collaborate with other teen organizations for special programs. Through visits to Museums, talks with arts professionals, and exchanges with their peers, the Teen Leadership Council nurtures creativity and ambition in developing the next generation of cultural programmers.

Teen Programs include Art Looks, a program that brings teens into the studios of contemporary artists, and behind the scenes of arts and cultural institutions, and Studio Works, an intensive art making workshop series designed to give teens an opportunity to work directly with professional artists. Additionally, Art Looks and Studio Works include virtual components, such as online DIYs created by Teen Leadership Council teens, and Teen Talks, an Instagram series in which TLC teens are in conversation with contemporary artists.
