
Senior/Chief Curator – Contemporary Art

Louvre Abu Dhabi champions cultural achievements from prehistory to the present day. The galleries are not separated by geography but set in chronological order, the aim is to encourage respect, curiosity, learning and self-reflection.
Opportunity:
Louvre Abu Dhabi is looking to appoint a “ Senior/Chief Curator – Contemporary Art (Wing 4)” to join the Scientific, Curatorial & Collection Management Department. The role holder will be required to work in Louvre Abu Dhabi office in Saadiyat Island. Wing 4’s collection reflects the 19th – 21st centuries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop the medium and long terms proposals for strategies defined by the Scientific, Curatorial & Collection Management Director on exhibitions and displays, proposing potential acquisitions and research opportunities relating to the modern and contemporary collections.
- Manage and develop the units budget, along with the administrative, legal and financial actions for the wing.
- Review, advice and refine the wing’s project proposals and feasibility reports supporting in providing timeframes, funding parameters and resource allocation.
- Review the wing’s progress and analyze the reports on trends of visitor activities and provide advice and recommendations for further actions to the department Director.
- Support the wing’s activities in complex, blocked and other unforeseen circumstances that are impacting the delivery of daily activities, projects or potential implementation.
- Regularly evaluates and ensures the wing’s current research, implementation and maintenance procedures are aligned to internationally recognized standards.
- Support in the initiatives of the other department’s across the Louvre Abu Dhabi including, but not limited to, collections development and acquisition strategy and content planning in the mediation and education policy.
- Subject matter expert on one of the fields related to modern and contemporary art through continuous self learning to enhance the wing’s knowledge offerings, understanding and techniques on current collections and on researching of artists and collections that are of future interest to the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
- Enhance Louvre Abu Dhabi’s international reputation through actively developing research by the way of publications and contribution in conferences (inside and outside the institution), while also looking to enhance opportunities for loans and development relating to the wing’s collection.
- Ensure transfer of knowledge to team members and provide appropriate on the job training opportunities.
- In collaboration with Museography Collection Management team, manage the collection for the wing, developing preventive and curative conservation policies, supervising restoration actions projects in liaison with Preventive Conservation Unit and create the displays in liaison with Museography Unit.
- Create and develop the content planned in the mediation and education policy relating to wing.
- Ensure operational excellence in achieving KPI’s, working towards establishing a sustainable financial model by achieving any set financial targets and driving internal process improvement and efficiency.
- Consider the customer prospective in all your projects – working to understand and manage all stakeholders.
- Create learning opportunities by collaboration, transfer of knowledge, or developing employees in your respective area, that drive employee engagement and growth across the Museum.
Required Qualifications & Experiences:
- PhD in Art history or relevant field.
- A minimum of 10 years experience as a Curator in a museum or museum related institution.
- Strong research experience in international context linked with the field of expertise.
- Extensive list of publications in the field, including essays and articles in peer reviewed journal.
- Strong background of public talks, lectures, presentations at international level.
- Teaching experience in an academic institutions at a university level.
- Fluency in English, French will be an added advantage.
