Goucher College seeks a dynamic, innovative, and visionary Exhibitions Director and Curator capable of leading a vibrant college exhibitions program deeply rooted in the Liberal Arts. The new Curator will be broadly knowledgeable in contemporary art and criticism, with an ability to connect their expertise with diverse traditions in global, visual culture.

The ideal candidate will have a sophisticated understanding of issues and opportunities associated with educational and cultural organizations. They will possess a passion for connecting and interacting with a diverse student population, as well as stakeholders in the broader community within and beyond Goucher.

They will be expected to articulate a compelling vision for the integration of exhibition, education, and engagement, one that positions the galleries as an essential component of the intellectual life of the College. As a rich resource for the surrounding community, the College galleries, and by extension the Curator, will be open to outreach and partnership with cultural institutions throughout the region.

The Curator must be equally adept at the curatorial, managerial, educational, and administrative responsibilities of the position. The Curator works closely with faculty in Studio Art, Visual and Material Culture, and allied disciplines with decisions on exhibitions programing and visiting artists. The Curator works closely with associates in Special Collections & Archives to manage event planning, programming, and interdisciplinary student exhibitions in the Collaborative Humanities Lab.

The Curator will oversee the exhibitions program of the Silber Gallery, the Rosenberg Gallery, and the Rosalie Bond Display Window, including the preparation and installation of all artwork and objects displayed in the galleries.

The Curator will oversee the new Student Art Acquisition program, with a dedicated fund to acquire new artwork annually for the College’s collection with the active participation of students, and to teach one course on contemporary art and exhibition design in connection with that program. The Curator will also co-manage the College art collection with the advice and consent of the Studio Art & Visual and Material Cultural Programs.

The Curator should also actively engage with Advancement staff in fundraising and donor engagement efforts at the College and have an ability to seek and secure grant funding for exhibition programs and specialized projects. They should therefore possess exceptional writing, communication, and research skills. Creativity, organization, integrative thinking, and an ability to balance short and long-term projects while maintaining a spirit of collaboration are all ideal qualities of the successful candidate.

Among the day-to-day responsibilities of the position are exhibition planning, program development, audience development, budget development and management, communications, and operations including the hiring and supervision of a student gallery staff.

Although currently there is not a Preparator, the College is looking to create a new part-time gallery assistant position to assist in the installation of all artwork.
