SCAD – The University for Creative Careers

As an associate curator, you will develop extraordinary proposals for exhibitions that feature SCAD and visiting artists and will liaise with artists and galleries on the national and international stage. You will coordinate Master of Fine Art exhibitions in Savannah; network with local arts organizations, potential patrons, and the media in consultation with the chief curator or executive director; and will monitor artist activity — to include researching artists for exhibition consideration. As needed, you will prepare itineraries for and host visiting artists, oversee layout and installation of exhibitions alongside the exhibition operations team, and support senior curatorial staff with the development of their projects (e.g., administrative and installation support, research, etc.).

Among other duties, you will gather images and other artist press materials for publications, docent preparation, and press needs; develop checklists for approved exhibitions, and keep an open line of effective communication with prospective artists and professionals about exhibition spaces, logistics, and deadlines prior to the exhibition. You will write and proofread exhibition blurbs, label copy, talking points, show summaries, catalog texts, invitation/marketing texts, and other professional texts. You will also develop strong working relationships with SCAD faculty and community-based education programs, as well as present curatorial talks and tours of exhibitions to the SCAD community, patrons, and the public.

The successful candidate has an outstanding record of planning and implementing exhibitions, publications, and public programs. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, are a must for this position, as is the ability to deliver captivating presentations. Strong knowledge of modern and contemporary art and design, as well as an interest in SCAD artists, is essential.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.A. or M.F.A. in art history, allied art, general art, or education program
  • Minimum of five years of curating experience at a museum or gallery
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word), EMAS, and comfortable working with a Mac computer
