
Art Installer
MIT List Visual Arts Center
The MIT List Visual Arts Center, MIT’s contemporary art museum, is looking for a freelance Art Installer to install and de-install art in the List Center’s 5000 sq. foot galleries and throughout MIT’s campus. The List Center presents a dynamic program of six to nine special exhibitions a year. Under the supervision of the Gallery Manager, the Art Installer is a member of the installation crew, working 3–5 weeks to prepare the galleries, fabricate exhibition components, mount AV systems, and install art. In addition to the 3–5 week installations, the Art Installer is needed for periodic 1 week campus collection projects. Short-term hires are engaged through the MITemps Program, managed by nextSource. In addition to the Gallery Manager, the Art Installer works in close concert with the List Center’s Registrars, Curators, and Preparator.
Key Responsibilities
- Art handling— Receiving crates
- Packing and crating works for transit
- The careful movement and placement of art work
- Art installation of a wide range of media from paintings and objects to large scale installation and AV presentations
- Preparation of galleries— wall building, sheetrocking and painting
- Fabrication and preparation of exhibition components, including pedestals, exhibition furniture, object mounts, and AV systems
Qualifications
- Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with exceptional attention to detail
- Experience in art handling, carpentry, painting, work shop safety
- Interest in Contemporary Art
- Knowledge of video and audio systems
Work Requirements
- Work may require moving objects weighing 20 to 100 lbs
- Work may require traversing long distances or moving from site to site
- Work may require carrying, handling and climbing ladders/heights to carry/place objects
