
NMK Fellow of Korean Art
Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum is launching the Korean Art Fellow position for 3 years (2023-2025), funded by the National Museum of Korea (NMK). Under the supervision of the Joseph de Heer Curator of Asian Art, the NMK Fellow is a motivated museum professional with a strong attention to Korean culture, art and history and a familiarity with current museum theories of Asian art. The fellowship will provide an opportunity to build experience working in a large world art museum alongside seasoned museum professionals. The main function of the Fellow is to focus on Korean art projects and to support the department head in their respective field.
This fellowship will also provide opportunities to develop experience in collection assessment, collection building, object provenance research, building community connections, and donor cultivation. The Fellow will work closely with a specialist on interpretive planning and texts for Korean art-related programs,focused exhibitions, and gallery rotations. The fellow will have opportunities to develop their own research project that relates to the museums collection of Asian art. There are additional things required for role besides application.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct research for focused exhibitions with National Museum of Korea and gallery rotations
- Under the supervisors direction, act as a liaison between partners in Korea and the museum; translate relevant materials and messages into either English or Korean
- Facilitate loans from Korea and artists visits if necessary
- Write and edit labels for Korean art exhibitions under the supervision of the department head and publication head
- Research Asian art collections and document the findings in the departments archive and museum database
- Research archival records and collection histories including objects provenances.
- Attend curatorial meetings that include all ten departments and their curators
- Work with interpretive specialists and Asian art team members, plan for and participate in visitor learning and engagement programs.
- Draft blog posts, write program descriptions, and brainstorm content for press and marketing
- Participate in museum-wide team initiatives and other museum or departmental tasks as assigned
- Produce scholarly publications and cultivate the relationship with Asian communities in the Denver region/metropolitan area
- Perform other duties or special projects as assigned
- Consistent usage of the Racial Equity Lens in day-to-day operations
- Yearly goal setting to support Racial Equity Roadmap initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, etc.):
- Minimum M.A. in the specialization of Korean art history or Korean cultural studies
- Advanced Korean and English language proficiency
- At least 5 years of professional work experience in a museum or research/educational institution; exhibition or gallery experience and publications highly desirable.
- Passion, excellence, and intellectual innovation in pursuing curatorial projects of Korean art; has a goal of developing a career in museums
- Quick learner; enjoy working collaboratively and in a fast-paced environment; able to think creatively and critically
- Ability to conduct original research in Korean art and history
- Knowledge of current trends and theories in Asian art history, museum studies, and provenance research; knowledge of contemporary art and pop culture
- Advanced knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the interpretation and exhibition of a museum collection and traveling collections of Korean art
- Ability to present scholarly information to diverse audiences
- Familiarity with the US museum system as well as that of Korean cultural institutions
