Working closely with the Director, Gilane Tawadros, the Head of Exhibitions is part of the senior management team, helping to deliver our mission to put artists and audiences at the heart of everything we do.The successful candidate will be a dynamic, engaged and knowledgeable curator with extensive experience of exhibition-making. They will relish the opportunity of working collaboratively with artists, external curators and partners, nationally and internationally as well as with colleagues across the Whitechapel Gallery.
General responsibilities and duties include, but will not be limited to:
- In close liaison with the Director, operationally managing the Exhibitions programme of the Gallery.
- Directly curating part of the exhibition programme.
- Managing the operational curatorial work of the Exhibitions team.
- Overseeing exhibition-related publications including advising on content and commercial viability.
- Liaising with artists and their representatives, arts institutions and funders.
- Liaising with all Whitechapel Gallery departments, particularly the Director and Senior Managers.
- Managing the overall budget for the Exhibitions Department in conjunction with the Director
- Contributing expertise and occasional lectures to the MA in Curating and Public Programmes.
- Deputising for the Director in artistic matters.
- Deputising for the Director in representing the Gallery within the international art world.
- Dealing with the press as required, acting as a representative of the Gallery.
- Liaising with the Director of Education and Public Programmes to ensure conceptual continuity between Exhibitions and Education Programmes.
- Working with the Development department on fundraising, particularly from individual donors.
- Leading patrons’ tours.
Conditions of Work
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours of work: full-time
Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 5:45pm, with one hour for lunch - Salary: £45,000 gross per annum
- The period of notice is 3 months in writing on either side
- Probationary period: 6 months
- Due to the nature of the job, some evening and weekend work will be required, as well as occasional travel. This will be compensated by time off in lieu.
