About the Role
We are looking for a dynamic and passionate manager to lead the daily operations of Cell Studios. This role demands practical knowledge and understanding of building functionality and systems to address various maintenance issues and generate maintenance reports. Ideal candidates will have hands-on experience in building maintenance and are ready to step into a managerial and project management role. Previous experience in building management within the arts is a plus.
The Head of Studios Operations will interact daily with Cell’s studio users, supporting their needs and embodying a sensitive and human approach, aligning with our organization’s mission. The primary role is to maintain studio retention across Cell’s seven studio buildings, which includes managing the full-time studio technician, freelance contractors, and cleaning/maintenance contractors. This role encompasses both office-based administrative work and regular field visits to Cell Studios across our sites in East and South East London.
With our largest project at our Leyton site recently completed and fully occupied, and new permanent studios in Hackney Wick, Cell is planning another major studio construction project. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to provide input at the design stage and contribute to marketing efforts, shaping Cell’s creative communities across our existing sites, offering exciting challenges and autonomy within the organization.
About the Organization
Cell Project Space is a self-financing, sustainable, and independent organization driven by its founders and directors, Milika Muritu and Richard Priestley. Initially formed as an artist-run initiative, the organization has evolved into a not-for-profit company and charity. Our mission is to offer affordable workspace to artists alongside an independent exhibition and public program. The revenue from affordable workspaces supports an ongoing program of exhibitions, projects, talks, screenings, and events in our gallery in Bethnal Green. Cell Project Space Ltd and the charity arm, Cell Foundation, offer affordable workspace to 1000+ artists and designer-makers at eight sites comprising 130,000 sq. ft. of workspace in East and South East London. Our office is a professional, relaxed, and friendly environment where interaction between staff from all areas of the organization is commonplace.
Studios
We provide established self-contained studio spaces ranging from 100 to 2000 sq. ft. on fixed-term occupancy licenses. Occupiers include visual artists, designer-makers, and other creative SMEs. Our studios are located in converted industrial buildings, each with its own vibrant creative community. Cell has also been working towards its workspace sustainability mission, securing some sites for perpetuity through freehold and long leasehold acquisitions, ensuring the long-term existence of the organization, its artists’ workspaces, and its public programs.
Equal Opportunities
Cell Project Space is committed to equal opportunities. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and are dedicated to building a diverse workforce.
