About The Studio Museum in Harlem
Founded in 1968, The Studio Museum in Harlem champions and preserves the prolific legacy of African descent artists, fostering critical thinking about art, culture, and community. It emerged amid the political and cultural tumult of the late 1960s to spotlight overlooked artists of color. Today, it remains a hub for Black artists worldwide.
Internship Program Overview
The Studio Museum’s Internship Program offers valuable experiences to college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates, shedding light on the inner workings of a professional museum. Interns collaborate on meaningful projects, participate in contemporary museology discussions, and engage with museum staff.
Eligibility
Only individuals authorized to work in the United States may join the internship program. The Museum may consider expressions of interest in volunteer services from non-work authorized individuals.

Applicants can select up to two positions, indicating their primary and secondary choices in the cover letter.
Selection Process
Due to a high volume of applications, only selected candidates will be contacted for interviews. Required application materials include:

Spring 2024 Internship Details
- Dates: January 22, 2024 – April 26, 2024 (14 weeks)
- Requirements: Minimum 15 hours/week (M-F), with one in-person day in Harlem
- Stipend: $3,150
- Application Deadline: October 16, 2023, at 11:59 PM
- Interview Notifications: By November 10, 2023
All interns must attend an in-person orientation on January 22, 2024, and provide their own computer. Professional development sessions, including gallery and museum visits, talks, and workshops, are mandatory and part of the internship experience.
Curatorial Internship
The Curatorial Intern will work under the Curatorial Assistants’ guidance, contributing to various research projects. Key responsibilities include researching and writing for the permanent collection, as well as thematic exhibitions. Potential tasks may involve digital archive management and administrative support for exhibition-related projects. Interns collaborate closely with curators and assistants.
Qualifications
This position is designed for undergraduate and graduate students majoring/minoring in art history, visual culture, or related fields. Ideal candidates possess a passion for curating, excellent writing and research skills, and knowledge of contemporary art. Strong multitasking and independent work abilities are essential.
