Curator of Photography Position
We are seeking a specialist in photography history to fill the Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography role. Your primary responsibility will be to strengthen the development, research, presentation, interpretation, renown, and growth of the Museum’s photographic art collection. You will achieve this through various means, including exhibitions, collection installations, public programs, publications, digital media, and social media.
Responsibilities
- Propose, organize, and coordinate innovative photography exhibitions, drawing from our collection and other institutions.
- Collaborate with various departments to meet exhibition production schedules.
- Participate in reinterpreting the collection.
- Lead initiatives to expand and deepen our photographic art collection through acquisitions.
- Work on development and donor cultivation.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Museum curatorial departments.
- Promote public and educational programming to increase visibility and audience engagement.
- Conduct advanced scholarly art historical research.
- Manage collections owned by and on loan to the Museum.
- Supervise and mentor interns.
Qualifications
- M.A. or Ph.D. in relevant field preferred
- Demonstrated 3-5 years of relevant work experience as a curator
- Knowledge of photography and new media
- Knowledge of critical histories and theories
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to make connections across collections
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
- Grant development experience
About the Collection
The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences formed the first U.S. school of photography in 1889. Our photography collection has grown over the years, focusing on American imagery, Latin American photographers, and various genres of work.
