About the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)
The AGO, located in Toronto, is one of North America’s largest art museums, drawing approximately one million visitors annually. Its collection boasts over 120,000 artworks, including contemporary art, Indigenous and Canadian works, and European masterpieces. The AGO features a variety of exhibitions and programs and houses the Thomson Collection of Canadian and European art.
Fellowship Overview
The AGO seeks applications for the Thomson Fellowship in European Art. The one-year fellowship, with a possible second-year renewal, offers hands-on training and mentorship in museum careers.

Fellowship Responsibilities
- Develop an exhibition on maritime materials in art from 1200-1600.
- Conduct art historical research and secure loans from North American and European museums.
- Collaborate with museum conservators on technical research.
- Work with interpretive planners, editors, and designers to develop exhibition aspects.
- Engage in broader department and museum activities, interacting with a diverse team.
Required Skills
- PhD or ABD in art history or related Humanities field.
- Expertise in Medieval or Renaissance art.
- Strong analytical and writing skills.
- Experience in art communication for various audiences.
- Minimum 1-year experience in a museum Curatorial department.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual stipend of CAD $50,000 (subject to income tax).
- Health insurance stipend.
- 10 vacation days per year.
- Funding for research travel.
Eligibility
- Preference for Canadian citizens or those eligible to work in Canada.
- International applicants must qualify through specific programs.
