Purpose of the job
● Together with and in support of the Director, to conceive, develop, manage and deliver The Showroom’s exhibitions and public programme in line with our mission, including conducting curatorial research, and initiating and building relationships with artists, researchers, collaborators and partners locally, nationally and internationally.
● Day-to-day management, delivery and administration of the exhibitions and public programme
● Reporting to the Director and Board and working with the Gallery Manager on project management, fundraising and communications.
● Upholding and maintaining the core values of the organisation, as conceived in the 2021 business plan, with an emphasis on transparency, accessibility, diversity, learning and sustainability.
Core duties – these are not exhaustive but reflect current plans for the role
Programme – Exhibitions, Publications, Workshops and Events
● To conceive, strategically develop, curate, manage, produce and deliver new commissions of artists’ work for the exhibitions and public programme.
● To manage projects across the programme, and support the Gallery Manager in combining programming with sustainable organisational planning so that organisational delivery is not expected to go beyond available resources (including, financial, human and physical).
● To write curatorial texts across the programme; to edit and manage production in liaison with designers, printers and partners.
● To oversee efficient and sustainable installation, production and de-installation of exhibitions and events, including engaging and overseeing additional staff and contractors as needed.
● To coordinate exhibition previews and other events with the support of the team.
● To contribute to the maintenance of archival documentation of the programme, as far as resources allow.
● To be self-supporting in programme-related administration.
● To provide accurate and timely information to the Gallery Manager and Director with the necessary information for contracting with programme-related artists, suppliers and any other related contractors.
● Undertake exhibition and programme-related research within available resources, focused on local, national and international artists and wider curatorial, critically engaged practices across the arts ecology to further develop The Showroom’s programme of exhibitions and events.
● To review expectations and aspirations around The Showroom programme with colleagues, ensuring that everyone is clear about what is possible within available and predicted resources.Finance and Governance
● To co-set and then manage exhibition or project-specific budgets and feed into annual budget-setting processes with the Gallery Manager and Director.
● To maintain good financial recordkeeping according to agreed financial procedures.
● To monitor programme-related risk and budget shortfalls and communicate with the Gallery Manager and Director in a timely manner.
● To provide accurate and timely programme-related financial information to colleagues in support of funder and sponsor applications and reporting.
● To keep up-to-date with policy at a national level and understand how it impacts The Showroom level (e.g. culture policy, Brexit, etc)
● To attend and present at Board meetings as needed, supporting the Gallery Manager
● To review any changes to programme-related policies proposed by the Gallery Manager and/or Director, and discuss and implement as needed.
