Introduction The Asia Foundation, in partnership with the Asian Art Museum, invites applications for the 2024 Margaret F. Williams Memorial Fellowship in Asian Art. This program encourages the exchange of ideas among emerging curatorial talents in the field of Asian or Asian American art. Applications open on January 31 and close on March 3. The foundation will announce the selected fellows in early April.
Fellowship Overview The fellowship occurs biennially and selects two emerging contemporary art curators, one from Asia and one from the United States. These curators gain a unique residency opportunity at the Asian Art Museum’s Contemporary Art Department. Under the guidance of Abby Chen, the senior associate curator, fellows embark on a three-month journey of professional growth.
Museum and Fellowship Details Situated in San Francisco, the Asian Art Museum hosts an extensive collection of Asian art, featuring over 20,000 pieces that range from ancient artifacts to contemporary works. The 2024 fellows will join the Practice Institute at the museum, contributing to various projects under Cheng Xu, assistant curator of games and technology. Their work will encompass a range of new arts practices and interactive experiences.
Fellowship Benefits Fellows receive round-trip travel, housing, a daily stipend, and a $10,000 grant for a self-designed study tour. Additionally, the Practice Institute offers a grant for developing a special project or program, ideally implemented during the residency or by the end of 2024.
Diversity and Inclusion Goals The fellowship aims to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curatorial field. It encourages applications from individuals with diverse perspectives affected by sexism, heterosexism, or racism. The program values fresh outlooks and aims to empower the next generation of curatorial leaders.
Program Background Established in memory of Margaret F. Williams by Dr. Haydn Williams, the fellowship fosters professional development in the Asian art curatorial field. It celebrates Mrs. Williams’ passion for art, kindled through her extensive travels and her time as a docent at the Asian Art Museum.
