Introduction to the 2024 Open Call
The European Union Prize for Citizen Science awards significant achievements in knowledge advancement through citizen empowerment. It celebrates initiatives that foster change, broaden knowledge, and showcase innovative practices in Open Science. These initiatives should contribute to societal, environmental, and political progress.
What is Citizen Science?
Citizen Science involves the public’s active participation in scientific research. The European Commission defines it as contributions to science by the general public through intellectual efforts, knowledge, or resources.
Invitation to Submit
The Prize welcomes a variety of initiatives that exemplify outstanding citizen engagement in science and vice versa. Eligible contributions can range from individual projects to comprehensive activities.

- Award Ceremony: September 2024 at Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria
Scope and Eligibility
This Prize is open to a broad spectrum of scientific and social endeavors that involve citizen participation. Eligible initiatives should not only advance science but also deliver social benefits and support open, inclusive societies.
Initiatives that have been completed or are significantly progressed by the submission deadline are eligible. Projects should be no older than two years or, if older, must have significant recent updates or developments.

- Grand Prize: €60,000
- Diversity & Collaboration Award: €20,000
- Digital Communities Award: €20,000
Encouraged Initiatives
Submissions that align with the European Research Area’s strategic research and innovation orientations are especially encouraged. These include initiatives that promote digital and green transitions, sustainability, and inclusive, democratic societies.

Winners must be available for contact during the notification period. Failure to respond may result in the award going to an alternate recipient.
