Introduction
In recent years, the need to reevaluate artistic freedom has become apparent. This challenge is not limited to countries under authoritarian rule but extends to democracies as well. The Artistic Freedom Residency 2024, themed “Non-Utterance,” seeks to address these concerns by offering a platform for unexpressed artistic and curatorial projects.
Residency Overview
The residency, hosted by AIR InSILo, provides a supportive environment for artists and curators. It encourages the realization of projects that have faced political challenges or self-censorship. The initiative welcomes a range of artistic expressions and stages of project development, emphasizing the process over the final product.
Who Can Apply
The program is open to a diverse group of participants, with a focus on late-emerging or early mid-career artists. Special consideration is given to working mothers, underrepresented artists, individuals from countries with limited cultural support, LGBTIQA+ community members, and former shortlist candidates. Students, except PhD candidates, are not eligible.
Residency Details
Selected participants will enjoy a 6-week residency, with financial support for honorarium, production, and travel expenses. The residency includes mentoring, the opportunity for family accommodation, and the use of AIR InSILo’s facilities. Participants’ work will be featured in InSilo Magazine and receive PR support.
Selection and Application Process
The application deadline is April 6, with the selection process concluding by May 20. Applicants must submit a comprehensive proposal in a single PDF file, including a proposal letter, project presentation, and personal portfolio. The residency operates in English, with additional communication in German and Russian. A solidarity fee applies to applicants from industrial countries, supporting the AIR InSILo Emergency program.
Conclusion
The Artistic Freedom Residency 2024 stands as a beacon for artists and curators facing censorship. It not only provides a space for creative exploration but also fosters a community of support and understanding.
