Job Summary
The Getty Museum aims to foster curiosity, enjoyment, and understanding of visual arts. It holds a vast collection of artworks across two sites: the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The Museum frequently organizes temporary exhibitions and maintains an ongoing gallery improvement program.
The Opportunity
The Museum seeks two Curatorial Assistants for its Photographs Department. These positions involve researching the permanent collection of over 150,000 photographic works, contributing to the online catalog, and managing collection documentation. The role is critical for cataloging the collection and requires onsite work.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Apply art knowledge and research skills to document and organize the collection.
- Accurately enter data into the database and adhere to syntax guidelines.
- Manage basic collection and editing tasks.
- Assist with study room operations, including object retrieval and session monitoring.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in art or art history, with a Master’s degree preferred.
- 0-2 years of experience in art history or museum work.
- Proficiency in at least one foreign language.
- Experience with art historical research and writing is advantageous.
Skills and Abilities
- Team collaboration and relationship-building skills.
- Knowledge of photographic media and its history.
- Experience in handling fragile materials and familiarity with TMS preferred.
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.
