About Kyoto Experiment
Kyoto Experiment, a performing arts festival since 2010, is dedicated to the production and presentation of experimental performing arts. By featuring experimental works across genres such as theater, dance, music, and fine art, the festival fosters new dialogues and values within society.
Aim of the Programme
The programme aims to host up to eight critics from EU member states to enrich dialogues about the role of critique in art and culture. This residency allows participants to share their expertise and discuss the art scene’s dynamics, especially in Japan, in partnership with The Saison Foundation.
Who Can Apply?
The programme welcomes cultural journalists with a preference for those focused on performing arts. Eligible applicants include arts writers, critics, and theoreticians who work with any media format.
Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum of three years of experience in art or cultural critique
- Ongoing professional activity
- Proficiency in English
- Citizenship or permanent residency in any of the 27 EU member states

- Round-trip flight from Europe to Japan
- Travel expenses for transfers within Kyoto
- Accommodation during the residency
- A lump sum for living expenses
- Tickets to all festival programmes
- Networking opportunities with local and international art practitioners
- Support to engage with the local art scene
Expected Outcome
Participants will engage in public and semi-public discussions and are expected to produce a written article reflecting their experiences and insights.

Announcement of Results
Applicants will be notified via email by 14 June 2024.
Additional Notes
Applicants may need to acquire a visa for their stay. The organizer will assist but is not responsible for the outcome of visa applications. Applicants are advised to obtain travel insurance covering their stay.
