Position Summary
The Senior Curator, reporting directly to the Executive Director, plays a crucial role in conceptualizing and realizing the exhibition program and related publications at the museum. This leadership role shapes the curatorial vision, collaborates on projects and public programming, engages in fundraising, and builds relationships with other institutions and community partners.
Responsibilities
- Develop and manage the exhibition calendar in consultation with the Executive Director. This includes both the permanent collection and borrowed works for special exhibitions.
- Oversee the permanent collection and devise strategies for its growth.
- Communicate with the museum’s Board of Trustees, patrons, curators, collectors, and the public.
- Serve as a community representative for the museum both locally and beyond.
- Manage the Exhibitions and Collections team to maintain best practices in collection care, installation, and acquisitions.
- Create and oversee the production of written materials for exhibitions, such as catalogues and guides.
- Develop and manage budgets responsibly in all areas of oversight.
- Collaborate on public programs with colleagues from Learning and Interpretation, which may include lectures, workshops, and performances.
- Promote the museum’s exhibitions and projects to the media, in partnership with the marketing team.
- Engage in collaborative efforts with other institutions and represent the museum positively in all interactions.
- Participate in museum trips and support the Kemper Museum’s Collectors Forum as needed.

Job Specifications
- An advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or fine arts with at least five years of relevant experience.
- An established reputation and relationships within the contemporary art community.
- Proven experience in managing publications and working with a permanent collection.
- Must understand curatorial principles, practices, and ethical standards.
- A history of successful exhibitions and publications, coupled with excellent writing skills.
- A collegial management style that encourages teamwork and creativity.
- Proven experience in budget management and fiscal responsibility.
