Te tūranga | The Role
City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi seeks an experienced Exhibitions Manager to support the gallery team through logistical planning and exhibitions management. This role is integral to delivering a program that supports international and New Zealand artists through innovative contemporary art exhibitions of national significance.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of experience in an art gallery or museum context, including knowledge of contemporary art galleries and managing complex multi-media installations. Relevant project and budget management experience is required, along with excellent teamwork skills.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, experience leading teams, and working with artists and external practitioners to deliver engaging contemporary art experiences. This role offers access to a diverse arts and cultural network within Wheako Pōneke Experience Wellington.
City Gallery is currently facing challenges due to building works and is committed to bringing exceptional exhibitions to Wellington in different venues before returning home in 2026. This period invites innovation and collaboration.
Responsibilities include ensuring exhibition-critical paths are developed and met, managing activities related to registration, freight, collection, despatch, touring of artworks, technical support, project installation and deinstallation, and engagement of technical contractors.
Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako | Essential Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role leading complex projects and exhibitions with multiple stakeholders in the GLAM sector, including high-value international exhibitions.
- Thorough understanding of contemporary and international gallery and museum practices for the safe handling, presentation, and display of art and cultural objects.
- Experience working with artists, subject specialists, and technicians on display development and delivery.
- Energy, creativity, and resourcefulness with a commitment to strategic outcomes.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and ideally some capability in Te reo Māori.
- Demonstrated task and project management skills with familiarity with project planning software.
- Experience managing exhibition insurance, logistics, and tours with knowledge of New Zealand Government legislation and developments in the arts and cultural sector.
- Knowledge of management functions (financial, staff management, planning, budgeting, and reporting).
- Passion for art, science, history, museums, or community building.
