Opportunity Overview
An Assistant Curator position is available at UQ Art Museum. This role involves providing curatorial, organizational, and research assistance to the Curators. Duties include research, writing acquisition rationales, managing correspondence, and supporting UQ Art Museum exhibitions, projects, and events. The role collaborates across the Art Museum team to ensure timely and successful program delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct curatorial research for the UQ Collection, exhibition program, and other projects.
- Write acquisition rationales, exhibition labels, and related texts.
- Prepare correspondence and documents for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with grant submissions and acquittals.
- Liaise with artists, art dealers, and other arts professionals.
- Supervise interns and assistants under the Curator’s direction.
- Catalog and manage records for works of art.
- Plan and implement exhibitions and educational outcomes with the curatorial and educational staff.
- Lead tours of exhibitions and respond to inquiries about the UQ Collection.
- Provide administrative support to the Curators, Director, and Education Manager.
Qualifications
- Degree in Art History, Visual Studies, Curatorial Practice, Arts Management, or Museum Studies; or equivalent experience and training.
- Knowledge of exhibition-making, art history, and contemporary Australian art.
- Strong research and writing skills for diverse audiences.
- Engagement with the arts community.
- Proficiency in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage projects, prioritize workload, work independently, and meet deadlines.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in writing for art museums, such as acquisition rationales and exhibition labels.
- Competence in collection management software.
- Experience in handling and cataloging works of art.
- Public speaking experience about art.
