apexart is a non-profit arts and education space in Tribeca, NYC, with a 30-year history of mounting critical exhibitions in New York and worldwide. It hosts an international Fellowship Program, organizes events, and publishes books on contemporary art topics. apexart is a small organization with a strong international following.
Position Details
- Title: Director of Operations
- Start Date: ASAP, but no later than August 31st
- Location: Offices at 291 Church Street, New York, NY
- Salary: $83,000 plus 3% 401k option, $500 monthly medical supplement, monthly unlimited MTA card. Total package value approximately $90,000.
- Travel: Opportunities for travel with international and non-NYC exhibitions.
- Work Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-6pm, with occasional evening hours (~1/mo).

Responsibilities
- Ensure continuity in exhibition administration, financial organization, development, and general management.
- Coordinate with curators for New York and international exhibitions.
- Manage administrative and financial aspects, including production logistics and feasibility.
- Oversee production timelines, curatorial texts, and provide occasional tours.
- Manage a staff of four, including overseeing the Fellowship program, events, web presence, gallery production, and publishing.
- Handle general administration: bill pay, payroll, annual budget, financial reporting, Quickbooks entry, Board Meetings, insurance, and visitor greeting.
- Represent apexart in local partnerships and press.
- Maintain relations with funders and manage active grants.
- Initiate annual appeals and track donations.
- Research and apply for grants and donor opportunities.
Qualifications
- Must be self-initiating, responsible, and extremely organized.
- Strong critical assessment of the art world and an educational orientation.
- Three years of experience as an organization manager.
- Strong logistics and communication skills.
- Extensive computer skills including MAC OS, Google Drive, Slack, Quickbooks, Adobe, and Thunderbird.
- Problem-solving, logistics, and exceptional editing skills.
- Legally eligible to work in the US.
Exhibition Administration
- Coordinate with curators, enforce policies, and organize administrative and financial aspects of exhibitions.
- Vet production logistics and feasibility.
- Edit and provide feedback on curatorial texts.
- Oversee production timelines and provide occasional tours.
- Establish targeted outreach with the Director of Programs.
Operations
- Oversee and coordinate staff responsibilities and deadlines.
- General administration of gallery space, including financial management and visitor services.
- Represent apexart publicly and maintain relations with funders.
- Manage grants and initiate development schedules.
