The city of Münster announces the appointment of the Croatian curatorial collective “What, How and for Whom/WHW” as the new artistic directors of Skulptur Projekte 2027. This is a significant milestone, as it marks the first time the exhibition will be led by an all-female team.
A New Chapter Begins
Since its inception in 1977, Skulptur Projekte has been a key player in the global art scene, transforming Münster into an international art center every decade. The exhibition, founded by Dr. Klaus Bußmann and previously directed by the late Kasper König until 2017, is organized by Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the City of Münster. As the event approaches its 50th anniversary, the change in leadership promises to bring fresh perspectives.
WHW’s Vision
The curatorial collective WHW, consisting of Ivet Curlin, Natasa Ilic, and Sabina Sabolovic, will bring a new approach to the exhibition. Known for their focus on collective practices and contemporary issues, WHW plans to explore themes like democracy, climate change, and social cohesion through innovative art. Their appointment follows a rigorous selection process, highlighting their strong artistic vision and ability to address global challenges.
Impact on Münster
Münster’s Lord Mayor, Markus Lewe, emphasized the exhibition’s role in elevating the city’s cultural profile and fostering long-term artistic networks. Cornelia Wilkens, Head of Cultural Affairs, noted that Skulptur Projekte continuously evolves through its engagement with art and the city.
The Federal Cultural Foundation has backed the 2027 edition with one million euros, recognizing Skulptur Projekte’s unique contribution to public art. Director Kirsten Haß praised WHW’s focus on transcontinental, performative art and ecological sustainability.
Looking Forward
With WHW at the helm, Skulptur Projekte 2027 promises to redefine public art, addressing contemporary issues and fostering meaningful dialogues. Münster will continue to be a vibrant site for innovative art, reflecting and challenging the global zeitgeist.
