The McMichael Canadian Art Collection ranks among Canada’s top public galleries in size and significance, attracting more than 110,000 visitors annually. The gallery’s permanent collection features over 6,500 works by both historic and contemporary Canadian artists, including prominent figures like Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, and artists from various diasporic communities and Indigenous groups. The gallery is surrounded by 100 acres of conservation land, including an outdoor sculpture garden and a network of scenic trails offering breathtaking views of the Humber Valley.
Position Overview
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is seeking a French Programs & Community Engagement Coordinator to develop, implement, and coordinate French-language programs and teaching resources for McMichael’s school and community groups. The role includes engaging with Francophone community organizations and educational groups, fostering collaborations, and establishing enduring partnerships with local and regional Francophone communities. Additionally, the Coordinator will lead French-language public programming, including art-based educational and community outreach initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement French-language programs and resources for schools and public engagement, with a strong focus on French literacy and art-based programming.
- Coordinate and engage with Francophone community groups and educational organizations to foster collaborations and establish lasting partnerships.
- Deliver French-language training for Creative Learning & Program content to staff across the organization.
- Lead school programs, public engagements, and pilot projects, acting as a part of McMichael’s educator team.
- Support the recruitment and training of French-language educators, art instructors, and assistants.
- Coordinate French-language community programs for audiences of all ages, with a focus on outreach to local Francophone communities.
Competencies Required
- Full fluency in oral and written French, with a strong understanding of Francophone culture in Ontario and Canada, including newcomers’ Francophone communities.
- A graduate or undergraduate degree in French Language Studies, Education, Fine Arts, or Museum Studies.
- 3 years of experience in a public gallery/museum, cultural institution, or developing and leading educational programs and community events.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and within a team.
- Excellent customer service, written, and oral communication skills in both French and English.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, SharePoint), Google Meet, and Zoom.
- Flexibility to work occasional weekends based on programming needs.
Working Conditions

- Occasional travel to Francophone communities may be required.
- Some weekend work may be needed depending on programming.
