The Role:
The Gallery & Exhibition Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of exhibition and auction planning at Sotheby’s Asia locations, with a primary focus on Hong Kong. This role requires a combination of art handling expertise, project management, and leadership skills to ensure exhibitions run smoothly, on time, and within budget. Working closely with the Operations, Marketing, and specialist teams, the Manager will lead the execution of creative visions for exhibitions, while also managing schedules, vendor relationships, and day-to-day operations of gallery spaces.
Responsibilities:
- Exhibition Management: Oversee all exhibitions across Sotheby’s Asia, ensuring they are installed and opened on schedule and within budget.
- Collaboration: Work with internal teams including Operations, Marketing, and Specialist departments to execute exhibitions.
- Scheduling: Develop installation and breakdown schedules, optimizing manpower and resources for seamless operations.
- Vendor Management: Act as the main point of contact for external contractors and vendors, ensuring high-quality service and performance.
- Logistics: Coordinate interoffice property transfers and manage scheduling conflicts diplomatically.
- Team Leadership: Supervise the Operations Coordinator and support staff, driving team motivation and ensuring operational excellence.
- Sale Calendar Management: Maintain Sotheby’s Asia sale calendar, integrating long-term plans and coordinating internal/external events.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years of experience in art handling and exhibition management, preferably within an auction house setting.
- Proven leadership skills with experience in motivating teams and managing operational processes.
- Strong organizational abilities, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and manage scheduling and logistics effectively.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Sheets, and SAP.
- Ability to work in a professional office environment and occasionally in gallery spaces.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
This role provides an exciting opportunity for experienced exhibition managers to lead impactful projects within the art world. Flexibility for overtime and weekend work is required.
