About the Role:
The Assistant Curator will work collaboratively with the Director, Exhibitions Manager, and Curator as part of a dedicated team. The position supports an ambitious program of exhibitions, displays, and the care of the museum’s significant collection of fine and decorative art. Responsibilities include assisting with exhibition planning, collection management, and public engagement, as well as leading specific projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Exhibitions & Displays:
- Assist in planning and delivering temporary exhibitions and collection displays.
- Lead select exhibition and display projects.
- Write and proof exhibition texts, publications, and online materials.
- Represent exhibitions through talks and social media.
Collections Care & Development:
- Support the conservation and care of over 9,000 objects spanning classical times to the 21st century.
- Contribute to acquisitions and manage loans to/from the museum.
- Monitor collection storage and exhibition spaces for pests and environmental conditions.
- Ensure digital cataloging and collection representation online.
Research & Education:
- Conduct research on the museum’s core collection and assist external researchers.
- Collaborate on training volunteer guides and engaging audiences through talks, tours, and educational programs.
- Assist with teaching programs linked to the museum’s higher education partnerships.
About You:
The ideal candidate is dynamic, imaginative, and adaptable, with experience in art history or contemporary art and enthusiasm for art museums’ development. Key qualities include:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, adaptable to diverse contexts.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in collection management systems and other digital tools.
- A proactive and collaborative approach, willing to engage in physical handling and research.
Note: This is a hands-on role that may require extended hours occasionally.
