Role Overview
The Curatorial Assistant will support the Curator of Art in research, exhibition planning, and collection management. This position plays a key role in the development of exhibitions and strategic growth of the collection, working collaboratively with departments such as Audience Engagement, Collections Management, Development, and Marketing to shape a dynamic art program at the Bruce Museum.
Key Responsibilities
Exhibitions:
- Assist with research, writing, and organization of loan exhibitions and publications.
- Support the implementation of temporary exhibitions and permanent gallery rotations.
- Write and edit interpretive texts, labels, and digital engagement content.
- Collaborate on public programming and presentation of exhibition-related materials.
- Facilitate image rights and reproduction requests for exhibition and PR purposes.
Collections:
- Research potential acquisitions and prepare documentation for Collections Committee meetings.
- Assist with identifying potential deaccessions.
- Conduct provenance and in-depth research on artists and objects.
- Maintain and organize curatorial object files and collections management database.
- Support the relocation and rehousing of collections, including photography coordination.
General Responsibilities:
- Assist in fundraising efforts for exhibitions and programs.
- Contribute to public programming and write content for digital engagement platforms.
- Provide administrative support and implement new departmental policies.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in art history or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Experience: 1–3 years of curatorial experience in a museum or related institution.
- Broad knowledge of art history, with expertise in modern and contemporary art, photography, or Indigenous art preferred.
- Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in museum practices.
- Proficiency in Office 365 and familiarity with collections management databases (preferred).
- Ability to lift and move up to 15 pounds unassisted.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary: $50,000–$55,000 annually, based on experience.
