Te Papa is seeking an Assistant Curator (Art) to join their curatorial team for a 4-5 month fixed-term position. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to develop curatorial skills in a supportive and progressive environment. The Assistant Curator will work closely with curatorial staff on various aspects of collection development, research, exhibition planning, acquisitions, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collection Development: Contribute to the development and planning of the Historical Art Collection.
- Research: Conduct research for various projects, including acquisitions, exhibitions, web content, and publications.
- Exhibition Development: Assist in the research, development, and delivery of upcoming exhibition projects.
- Acquisitions and Loans: Support the acquisition and loan activities by liaising with national and international artists, museums, galleries, and private collectors.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Tertiary qualification in art history, fine arts, curatorial studies, or museum studies (post-graduate preferred).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong research skills and attention to detail.
- Some experience in exhibitions and/or writing about art.
- Passion for art and working with collections.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of people.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Awareness of tikanga Māori and sensitivity towards taonga.
- Commitment to cross-cultural dialogue.
- Competent in Windows and MS Office.
- Ability to plan and meet deadlines, providing accurate reports on activities.
