The Wallis Annenberg Curatorial Fellowship at LACMA provides a two-year opportunity for emerging scholars in the Latin American Art department. The Fellowship includes curatorial training, support for scholarly research on the museum’s permanent collection, and involvement in the organization of an international exhibition focused on the early modern connection between Asia and Latin America.
The Fellow will work closely with the Curator and Department Head of Latin American Art and gain experience in curating, research, cataloguing, exhibition organization, education, publications, acquisitions, conservation, public speaking, and fundraising. The Fellowship aims to prepare the Fellow for a future career as a curator in a large museum setting, offering mentorship and the chance to engage in all aspects of curatorial work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with planning and research for an international exhibition focused on Spanish American/viceregal art.
- Perform advanced scholarly research and support checklist development.
- Collaborate with public and private collections, both national and international.
- Participate in departmental meetings and collaborate with the Latin American team on various programs.
- Conduct in-depth research on selected Latin American works from the permanent collection.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of museum experience is preferred, particularly in Spanish American/viceregal and early modern art; knowledge of Asian art is a plus but not required.
- Ph.D. in art history or ABD preferred.
- Proficiency in Spanish (especially reading) is required; knowledge of Portuguese and French is a plus.
- Strong research, writing, communication, organizational, and public speaking skills.
- A strong interest in the acquisition, care, display, and interpretation of works of art.
- Creative and collaborative thinking with the ability to connect time periods and cultures.
