Location: 19 Minerva Works, Fazeley Street, Birmingham, B5 5RT, UK (with work at various programme locations)
Position Type: Permanent, Full-Time (0.6 FTE – approximately 21 hours per week)
Salary: £13,759 per annum (pro rata; full-time equivalent: £22,932)

Grand Union is an arts organisation based in Digbeth, Birmingham, dedicated to nurturing artistic, cultural, social, and environmental relationships that build equitable living. Our work spans exhibitions, community programming, live events, and creative projects that connect diverse communities with the arts. We are looking for a Programme Assistant to support our multifaceted programme, working across exhibition administration, communications, and operational tasks. This role is integral to our mission of fostering transformative community engagement and facilitating dynamic cultural programming.

Responsibilities

  • Programme Support:

    • Assist in administering and delivering projects, exhibitions, events, and activities, including off-site installations and community programmes.
    • Support reflective practice, evaluation, reporting, archiving, data collection, and meeting note-taking.
    • Contribute to digital production tasks, such as digital captioning.
    • Assist with management of shop, bar, and hospitality operations, including purchasing for gallery office, workshops, and events.
    • Maintain records for online shop sales, editions, and social enterprise products.
  • Communications:

    • Write and design social media posts and communication materials using tools like Canva, Mailchimp, and Adobe.
    • Support the delivery of digital communications, including website updates and distribution of print, press, and digital programme materials.
    • Respond to emails, social media inquiries, and telephone enquiries; greet and signpost visitors.
  • Operations:

    • Assist with event setup and stewardship for workshops, exhibitions, and other activities.
    • Support building operations and maintenance across Minerva Works and Junction Works sites.
    • Coordinate gallery opening and closing procedures, with flexibility for evening and weekend work.
    • Help coordinate volunteers, with support from the Programme & Operations Co-ordinator.

Who You Are

  • Skills and Experience:

    • Digital and written literacy with strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • Experience in supporting a range of cultural programmes, with a demonstrated capacity to handle administrative tasks efficiently.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a proactive, adaptable attitude.
    • A commitment to supporting diverse communities and nurturing relationships with partners, including artists, fabricators, community groups, and academics.

    • Resilient and optimistic, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
    • Open-minded, respectful, and inclusive in approach.

    • Please note: Our gallery and office are on the second floor of a warehouse building without a working lift, and thus are not currently wheelchair accessible.
