Postdoctoral Fellow – Rebanks (Art & Culture) at ROM

Location: Toronto, ON, Canada
Position Type: Full-Time, Postdoctoral Fellowship (12–24-month contract)
Salary: $55,000 per year plus a $2,500 research and travel stipend per year
Term: 1-year term, renewable for a second year
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week (Hybrid)

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), one of North America’s top cultural institutions, is seeking a dynamic postdoctoral fellow to pursue independent research in the field of Art & Culture. The fellowship is aimed at scholars who have earned their Ph.D. within the last five years. The selected fellow will work closely with the Co-Chief Curator of Art and Culture and be based primarily in residence at ROM, while contributing to public programming (approximately 10% of their time) and potentially assisting with exhibition development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original research leveraging ROM’s extensive collections and archives, focusing on one or more key areas (e.g., Indigenous Americas, Ancient Egypt, Global Fashion, etc.).
  • Publish research findings to enhance ROM’s reputation as a leading research institution.
  • Engage with diverse audiences through public programming and outreach.
  • Support exhibition and gallery development as needed, and foster connections between your research, ROM’s collections, and broader cultural networks.
  • Contribute to ROM’s mission of promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Candidate Profile:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field (earned within the last five years) with a strong academic background demonstrated by publications, presentations, and innovative research projects.
  • Expertise in one or more of ROM’s key research areas, with a commitment to diversifying existing narratives.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and public engagement skills.
  • A collaborative mindset with flexibility to be in residence at ROM and travel for fieldwork if necessary.
