The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) invites applications for the General Idea Fellowship 2025, aimed at supporting advanced research in contemporary art. Established in 2021 by artist AA Bronson, the fellowship is open to Canadian and international art historians, curators, critics, conservators, graduate students, independent researchers, and other professionals working in visual arts, museology, or related disciplines.
Fellowship Focus
- Research projects must engage with the NGC’s collections, particularly:
- The Art Metropole collection
- The General Idea fonds
- The AA Bronson collection
- Related Gallery collection material
- Research may focus on any aspect of contemporary art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, artists’ books, video, installation, and other media.
Key Responsibilities & Benefits
- The selected fellow will conduct research on-site at the NGC.
- The fellow will present their research findings in a lecture at the NGC Library and Archives near the end of the fellowship.
- The fellowship provides an opportunity for advanced scholarly work and public engagement in contemporary art.
Candidate Profile
- Open to Canadian and international applicants.
- Encouraged applicants include Indigenous peoples, women, people of any sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialized individuals, and people with disabilities.
- Applicants should demonstrate a strong academic or professional background in the visual arts, museology, or related disciplines.
