The Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tanja Michalsky, invites applications for the Ursula Nilgen Predoctoral Fellowships, funded by the Ursula Nilgen-Hertziana Foundation.

These short-term fellowships support dissertation projects on medieval Italian art (up to approx. 1250) through a 6-month research residency at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome.

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: 6 months

  • Monthly stipend: €1,365, with potential additional foreign allowance for residency in Italy

  • Start date: As soon as possible

  • Research presentation during the stay is expected

  • Fellows are encouraged to take part in the institute’s events and publishing opportunities

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program

  • Proficiency in Italian is required

  • Open to candidates of all nationalities

  • The application can be submitted in German, Italian, or English
