Full-time, 35 hours/week
Salary: $129,854 – $162,318/year

About the Role

SFMOMA is seeking a visionary Design Director to lead its Graphic and Exhibition Design teams and guide the institution’s creative strategies across physical and digital spaces. Reporting to the Chief Collections, Exhibitions, and Design Officer, the Design Director will interpret the museum’s mission through visual storytelling, environmental design, and accessible visitor-centered experiences.

This role combines leadership in design strategy with hands-on direction of major exhibition and branding projects. A central focus will be maintaining cohesive design systems that enhance the institution’s identity and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a collaborative in-house design team across graphic and exhibition disciplines
  • Provide creative direction for all design initiatives including exhibitions, branding, and visitor communications
  • Champion accessibility and sustainability in all visual and environmental outputs
  • Oversee design project timelines, budgets, and consultant relationships
  • Serve as a brand steward for SFMOMA’s identity across platforms and experiences
  • Develop long-range cross-departmental design strategies in alignment with institutional goals

Candidate Profile

  • M.A. or M.F.A. in Design, Art, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum 10 years experience, including 5+ in leadership roles
  • Strong background in exhibition design, multimedia environments, and art direction
  • Knowledge of ADA/OSHA standards and experience working with technical teams
  • Technical skills: Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Microsoft Office; AutoCAD, Cinema 4D, and 3D applications a plus
  • Experience managing large budgets, teams, and high-impact public projects
