Residence NRW⁺ is a residency programme based in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, designed to support emerging visual artists and curators through intensive mentoring, collaborative living, and professional development. With a strong emphasis on dialogue, practice, and network-building, the programme offers 12-month fellowships for artists and 6-month fellowships for curators. Participants live and work together in shared facilities and are encouraged to engage in joint projects, public events, and institutional collaborations across the NRW region.
Fellowship Format
- Artists: 4 fellowships, 12 months
- Curators: 4 fellowships, 6 months
- Monthly Stipend (Artists): €1,500 + €200 for production costs
- Monthly Stipend (Curators): €1,500 + €500 travel allowance
- Additional Support for Swiss Curators with Children: Up to CHF 1,000/month from Pro Helvetia
- Accommodation and Studio Space: Provided free of charge
- Project Budgets:
- Up to €10,000 for curatorial projects
- Up to €12,000 for the artists’ concluding exhibition
Eligibility Criteria

Artists:
- Must have a connection to NRW (birth, studies, residence, or work)
- Completed art degree within the past 5 years
- Under 40 years old at the start of the fellowship
- Must live primarily at the residence during the programme

Curators (NRW or Switzerland):
- Must have experience in curatorial practice
- NRW applicants: Degree in a relevant field within the last 5 years and under 35
- Swiss applicants: No age limit, but curatorial activity must have started within the last 5 years
- Must live primarily at the residence and engage in programme activities
Programme Highlights
- Shared living and working facilities to foster collaboration and exchange
- Mentoring by experienced professionals throughout and beyond the fellowship
- Artists develop a final exhibition with curators in NRW institutions
- Curators work in tandem to realise two independent projects across the region
