Salary: $80,000 annually
Onsite Requirement: Fully onsite
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is seeking an experienced Associate Curator of American Art to steward its renowned collection of 19th-century American painting and sculpture. This role focuses on the period between circa 1850–1920, marked by the rise of national schools and transatlantic artistic exchange. The position supports exhibitions, acquisitions, publications, and cross-departmental initiatives through the Center for American Art.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, interpret, and care for works from mid-19th to early 20th-century American art
- Organize and implement exhibitions, publications, and interpretive programs
- Collaborate with colleagues on CfAA initiatives across departments and institutions
- Recommend acquisitions and assess existing collection holdings
- Develop educational and scholarly materials in collaboration with Learning & Engagement
- Cultivate relationships with donors and contribute to fundraising strategies
- Represent PMA within the field and maintain active scholarly engagement
Candidate Profile
- Ph.D. preferred, with a minimum of 5 years of curatorial experience
- Specialization in 19th-century American art; knowledge of Latin American and/or Native American art is a plus
- Demonstrated record of exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and cross-functional collaboration
- Strong communication skills and familiarity with museum standards and tools
- Committed to diversity, ethical practice, and public engagement
