Feng Boyi Appointed Chief Curator of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2025
#Appointed curator #BiennaleThe internationally renowned curator and art critic Feng Boyi has been appointed as the Chief Curator of the upcoming Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2025, a major international cultural event taking place from summer to autumn 2025.
Held under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, the Biennale is organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and co-organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office, alongside major partners including Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, MGM, Sands China Ltd., SJM Resorts, S.A., and Wynn Resorts Macau.
Themed “Hey, what brings you here?”, this edition of the Biennale sets out to explore the history, memory, and present condition of Macao within a global framework. The event will span six sections:

In total, nearly 30 exhibitions will be presented across the city, featuring leading contemporary artists from more than a dozen countries and regions. Participating artists include Xu Bing, Ann Hamilton, Gregor Schneider, Bart Hess, Kasia Molga, and Chan Hung-Lu, among others. The programme aims to revitalise historical spaces, engage with Macao’s cultural landscape, and foreground contemporary reflections on human experience.
Feng Boyi, the appointed chief curator, is recognised as one of the most active independent curators and art critics in China. He is currently a researcher at the Institute of Art Sociology of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and has served as the Artistic Director of the He Xiangning Art Museum and the Suzhou Jinji Lake Art Museum.
His curatorial work has consistently highlighted marginal and alternative voices, emerging artists, and practices rooted in experimentation and critical inquiry. Notable past exhibitions include Reinterpretation – The First Guangzhou Triennial of Contemporary Art, China Today – The Reincarnation of Chinese Contemporary Art (Austria and the Netherlands), the Cross-Strait Art Exchange Programs, and Xu Bing: Ideas and Methods. Feng has received multiple accolades, including Curator of the Year from both the Art Power List (2010, 2016) and AAC Art China (2017, 2018).
Art Macao 2025 positions itself as a meeting point for global creativity and local context, aiming to serve as a kaleidoscope of ideas and artistic expression that reflect on Macao’s evolving place in the world.
