Kunsthal Extra City is a leading institution for alternative contemporary visual arts with social relevance, housed in a former church in Antwerp. The team consists of six permanent staff members, supported by freelancers and volunteers.
Job Description
As Artistic Coordinator, you will set a clear artistic direction for exhibitions, public programs, audience engagement, and communications aligned with the organization’s mission. You are responsible for the quality and management of exhibition concepts and processes, including budgeting and collaboration with (external) curators. You will personally curate at least one of the two annual major exhibitions in the church. Together with the business coordinator, you will share general organizational coordination and represent the Kunsthal in the Flemish arts landscape. You will lead a small team and maintain local and international networks with artists, curators, and partner organizations.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 6 years of relevant experience coordinating exhibitions and artistic projects, preferably in non-traditional spaces.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic artistic visions and manage budgets.
- Broad knowledge of contemporary (visual) art and social issues, with sensitivity to working with underrepresented artists and audiences.
- Strong network within the Flemish and international art scenes.
- Fluent in Dutch and English (written and spoken).
- Team player with leadership skills and a coaching attitude.
- Strong organizational and strategic abilities, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Willingness to occasionally work evenings or weekends.
- Higher education degree (e.g., art history, cultural studies, philosophy, history, cultural management) or equivalent experience.
