eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image at the University of Basel is offering three one-year NOMIS Fellowships, beginning September 1, 2026. The program supports innovative research on the epistemic functions of images across disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
Fellowship Format
- Duration: 12 months (starting September 1, 2026)
- Location: In-residence at eikones, Basel
- Funding: Generous salary, travel funds, conference funds, and academic resources
- No teaching or administrative duties
- Participation in selected institutional events is expected
Eligibility Criteria
- Doctoral degree required
- Applicants must have published either a monograph or at least three peer-reviewed articles
- Open to researchers from any field whose work relates to images as models or paradigms in aesthetic or scientific contexts
- Applications accepted in English or German
Research Scope
The programme invites research on the epistemological, didactic, and symbolic functions of images. Possible areas include:
- Imaging techniques in the natural sciences
- Visual canons and iconographies in the arts
- Stereotypes and ideals in social or political contexts
- Methodological reflection on image-based knowledge across disciplines
