The Boca Raton Museum of Art is Seeking a Chief Curator

Contract type: This is a full time, 40 hours per week position.
General Responsibilities
Working with the Director & CEO, the Chief Curator oversees all aspects of the curatorial team’s contributions to the Museum’s artistic and interpretive vision to position the Museum as a destination for modern and contemporary art in South Florida and a place for meaningful engagement.
Accountability
- Lead the development of a new strategy for installing, rotating and growing the collection and for a multi-year exhibition schedule. Lead the curatorial team and manage budgets, time, and commitments combining creativity with fiscal responsibility.
- In partnership with the Director of Learning and Engagement, collaboratively develop interpretation strategies.
- With the other members of the Director & CEO’s Leadership Team (Deputy Director for Museum Operations, Director for Learning and Engagement, Director of Advancement, and Director of Finance), facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and share responsibility for building the Museum’s brand and impact in the community, with an emphasis on engagement and accessibility.
Specific Responsibilities
- Oversee planning and implementation of collection development, interpretation, and related initiatives.
- Plan and implement a multi-year exhibition schedule and related publications in partnership with the Deputy Director of Museum Operations.
- Co-develop exhibition and curatorial budgets on an annual and multi-year basis.
- Represent the museum in the community, for the media, and with donors.
- Provide content and work collaboratively with Advancement staff to inform fundraising strategies, identify and help secure partners and sponsors.
- Cultivate and solicit donors to support exhibitions, collection initiatives, and publications.
- Inform and support the pedagogical and strategic vision for engagement and interpretation, producing content and leading programs.
- Participate in cross-departmental and community-based committees and initiatives as needed.
- Mentor and supervise the Curatorial staff by fostering a supportive culture; work collaboratively with Learning and Engagement staff in interpretation and programming for collection and exhibitions.
- Develop and maintain relationships with artists, collectors, dealers, and donors. Advocate for the Museum and for the arts in general in the community and nationwide.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree required; knowledge of art history (with a concentration in modern and/or contemporary art). PhD a plus.
- 7-10 years of experience working in the arts; minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in curatorial practice. Demonstrated experience managing staff and budgets.
- Distinguished track record of exhibitions and publications
- Superb organizational, strategic and communication skills, including interpersonal skills and public speaking.
- Genuine enthusiasm for the transformational power of the visual arts and education.
- Intellectual curiosity and the capacity to learn and adapt.
