Mattress Factory, a contemporary art museum and artist residency founded in 1977 in Pittsburgh’s Northside, seeks an Artistic Director to lead its artistic programming and help shape the institution’s vision as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027. The museum is known for site-specific, experimental, and alternative art forms, with a mission rooted in supporting artists across disciplines.
The Artistic Director is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, overseeing the Exhibitions and Education & Community Engagement Departments. This role will set the vision for exhibitions, residencies, public programs, and educational initiatives, fostering collaboration, experimentation, and inclusivity while deepening relationships with artists, audiences, and partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead artistic programming, including exhibitions, residencies, performances, talks, screenings, and events
- Shape exhibition strategies, budgets, and long-term planning with the Executive Director and Exhibitions Director
- Ensure artistic excellence, inclusivity, and accessibility in programming
- Oversee selection and support of artists, ensuring a strong residency experience
- Lead Education & Community Engagement Department to align educational programs with artistic vision
- Serve as lead spokesperson for artistic programs, representing the museum locally and globally
- Develop interpretive strategies, exhibition texts, and public engagement approaches
- Collaborate with Advancement team on fundraising strategies, donor engagement, and program representation
- Contribute to strategic planning, institutional priorities, and cross-departmental collaboration
- Foster a community network of artists, staff, members, and stakeholders
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience in curatorial work, artistic programming, and/or arts leadership
- Advanced degree in arts, humanities, or social sciences, or equivalent experience
- Proven leadership in arts, museum, or cultural organizations
- Deep knowledge of contemporary art, especially installation, site-specific, performance, and experimental forms
- Strong written, verbal, and public speaking skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Experience in budgeting, research, and digital tools
- Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel nationally/internationally
